Chrysanthemum SEA BREEZE

A Stunning Classic of Far Eastern Breeding

The 'Sea Foam' (Morskaya Pena) chrysanthemum is a result of many years of dedicated work by breeder Alevtina Nedoluzhko at the Botanical Garden-Institute of the FEB RAS. Unlike many imported commercial hybrids intended primarily for greenhouse production, this variety was specifically developed for open-field cultivation, keeping harsh climatic conditions in mind. Its standout quality is the rare combination of large, showy blooms and a sturdy bush habit.

Why choose this variety?

• Flower Diameter: With proper care, the blossoms exceed 10 cm, making them the striking focal point of any garden bed.
• Aesthetic Appeal: The soft, elegant pink hue blends harmoniously with ornamental grasses and conifers.
• Extended Bloom Time: The bush maintains its peak decorative state for 31–40 days, providing floral color well into mid-autumn.

Strengths and Considerations

The primary advantage of 'Sea Foam' is its adaptability to local growing environments. Its medium height (30–60 cm) makes it an excellent choice for the foreground or mid-ground of a flower border; the plant remains compact and does not collapse under the weight of its heavy blossoms, typically requiring minimal staking. However, one must note its moderate frost resistance. In regions with severe winters, the plant will require winter protection or mulching to ensure the root system survives until spring.

This variety is an optimal choice for gardeners seeking a balance between the sophistication of exhibition-grade chrysanthemums and the reliability of a hardy garden perennial. If you value robust breeding and want large, impressive flowers without the need for constant, intensive maintenance, 'Sea Foam' is an ideal addition to your landscape.
