Wild cabbage Ukrainska Osin

Strategic Storage: The Value of 'Ukrainska Osin'

For growers focusing on late-season and winter markets, the 'Ukrainska Osin' cabbage variety, developed by the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of NAAS, offers a reliable solution. This late-maturing white cabbage variety requires a 140–150 day growth cycle, making it a robust performer for operations aiming at long-term storage.

Crop Protection and Storage Performance

Post-harvest losses caused by pathogens are a major concern for large-scale storage. 'Ukrainska Osin' provides high genetic resilience to key diseases that typically compromise shelf life:

• Fusarium wilt resistance;
• Vascular bacteriosis management;
• High tolerance to soft rot and various storage rots.

With a head weight of 3.0–4.0 kg and a dense, flat-round structure, this variety is built to withstand prolonged storage periods of up to 6–8 months, maintaining its structural integrity throughout the winter.

Practical Implementation in Farming

The variety's gray-green appearance and uniform head shape meet standard supermarket requirements for retail. Beyond the fresh market, the density of the leaves makes this cabbage an excellent candidate for processing. Farmers prioritize this variety when they need to secure high-quality produce for late-winter sales, effectively reducing the need for chemical interventions during the storage phase.
