Blackberry DrisBlackFourteen

Practical Insights on Growing DrisBlackFourteen

If you are looking for a variety that is forgiving for beginners and consistently delivers high-quality commercial berries, DrisBlackFourteen by Driscolls is a top-tier choice. Developed by breeders Gavin R. Sills, Andrea M. Pabon, and Mark F. Crusha, this variety demonstrates remarkable adaptability in conditions where other cultivars often struggle.

Agronomic Characteristics

The upright growth habit is a significant advantage for spacing and orchard planning. Unlike trailing varieties, this structure makes maintenance and mechanization much simpler. While the presence of thorns requires proper protective gear during harvesting and pruning, it is a small trade-off for the plant's overall robustness.

• Drought Tolerance: The variety handles heat stress exceptionally well without fruit drop, making it a reliable performer in regions with inconsistent water supply.
• Ease of Propagation: One of its greatest operational benefits is how easily it propagates, allowing growers to expand their acreage without heavy investment in new planting material.

Yield and Supply Chain

DrisBlackFourteen is a late-season variety. This timing is strategic, allowing you to bypass the mid-summer peak and supply the market when fresh blackberry availability is lower. The oval-shaped, black berries are perfect for the fresh produce market, boasting excellent flavor profile and dessert quality. The fruit firmness ensures great shelf life and transportability, meaning losses remain low even when shipping to distant retail chains.

Managing a plantation of this variety is straightforward and follows standard protocols. As long as you maintain the upright canes correctly, the plant will reward you with a consistent yield that carries a high market value, satisfying even the most demanding customers.
