Cultivation and Management of the 'Glornywa' Blackberry

The 'Glornywa' blackberry, developed by the Polish breeding center Niwa Hodowla Roslin Jagodowych sp. z o.o. and registered in Ukraine in 2026, is a variety designed for commercial efficiency. Achieving maximum yield requires precise management of planting density and nutritional programs.

Soil Requirements and Planting Strategy

This variety thrives in well-drained loamy or sandy-loam soils with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Before planting, it is essential to ensure deep soil preparation and the incorporation of organic matter. The recommended planting scheme is 0.8–1.0 meters between plants within the row, with row spacing of 2.5–3.0 meters. This spacing is crucial for optimal light penetration and airflow, which significantly reduces the pressure of fungal pathogens.

Seasonal Care and Development Phases

• Early Spring: As the growing season begins, nitrogen-based fertilizers should be applied to stimulate vegetative growth. Pruning should focus on removing winter-damaged tips and training the canes onto a trellis system.
• Flowering and Fruit Set: During the critical flowering and fruit development stages, 'Glornywa' requires consistent moisture. Drip irrigation is highly recommended, aiming for 20–30 liters per linear meter per week. Potassium and phosphorus supplementation during fruit set is vital for berry quality and sugar accumulation.
• Post-Harvest Management: Immediately after harvest, old canes that have produced fruit must be pruned back to the base. This allows the plant to direct energy into the 5–7 strongest new canes for the following year's production, preventing overcrowding and ensuring proper cane maturation.

Given its Polish origin, 'Glornywa' is well-adapted to the climatic conditions of Central and Eastern Europe. However, in regions prone to harsh winters, growers should implement cane-bending techniques and use protective covers to ensure the survival of the fruiting wood.
