The basil variety "Lemon Aroma" is an annual semi-spreading plant reaching up to 35 cm in height, characterized by a rich lemon scent and flavor. All above-ground parts of the plant contain essential oil, imparting a pleasant citrus aroma and a distinctive taste to the greens: initially a slight bitterness followed by a sweet aftertaste. The leaves, young shoots, and flowers of basil are widely used in cooking both fresh and dried, serving as a spicy seasoning for meat and fish dishes, salads, and sauces, as well as for flavoring beverages, desserts, cheeses, and confectionery. Additionally, basil is used for pickling and canning vegetables, as well as for flavoring smoked products and sausages.
The plant is rich in mineral salts and vitamins A, C, P, and group B, making it not only a delicious but also a healthy seasoning. For growing "Lemon Aroma" basil, it is recommended to use light, well-drained soils with high organic matter content. Seeds are sown for seedlings at the end of March to early April at a depth of 0.5-1 cm at a temperature of +20-25°C; seedlings appear within 10-15 days. Seedlings are transplanted to open ground after the threat of frost, placing plants 15-20 cm apart in rows and 60 cm between rows. Successful rooting requires regular watering, soil loosening, weeding, and fertilization.
Basil is heat-loving and light-loving, requiring protection from cold winds and adequate moisture. Thanks to its compact size and decorative appearance, it is excellent for growing on a windowsill, allowing for fresh greens for an extended period. This rare basil variety is valued for its unique lemon aroma and versatility in culinary applications, making dishes more exquisite and fragrant.
