Crimean Purple Basil is a popular variety of herb known for its rich flavor and high yield. Seeds of this basil are suitable for growing both in open ground and in greenhouses. The plant is widely used in cooking to prepare various dishes, and also finds application in medical purposes due to its beneficial properties. For successful growing it is important to observe the correct conditions of planting and care.
This heat-loving plant does not tolerate low temperatures, therefore it is recommended to plant it after spring frosts. Basil is grown either by seedlings or direct sowing into the ground, with seeds sown at a depth of 1.5-2 cm 1.5-2 months before transplanting. The distance between plants should be 20-25 cm. Basil prefers light, fertile and well-lit soils. To extend the period of harvesting of aromatic leaves, it is necessary to regularly remove flower stalks, using the tops of the plants at the same time.
In addition to culinary merits, Crimean Purple Basil possesses natural protective properties: it repels pests, such as aphids and spider mites, which makes it useful for planting next to other vegetable crops. In August, the plant can be dug up with a clod of earth and grown in pots during the winter period, while it is pruned, leaving about 10 cm from the base, and provided with regular watering. For storage, collected leaves are recommended to be placed in hermetically sealed containers, which allows to preserve their aroma and freshness.
