POVOLZHY 49

POVOLZHY 49 is a mid-maturing variety of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with a vegetative period ranging from 65 to 85 days, depending on growing conditions. The plant is medium-sized, with a semi-upright bush and a medium-density pyramid-cylindrical spike covered with a strong waxy bloom. The grain is large, featuring a non-hairy ventral groove and embracing lodicules; the mass of 1000 grains varies from 39 to 54 grams. The grain natural density reaches about 650 g/L, and the raw protein content is between 12.4% and 15.2%, indicating high grain quality.

The variety is distinguished by high resistance to lodging and drought, as well as resistance to several diseases, including loose smut, net form leaf spot, and dwarf rust. Meanwhile, the variety shows medium resistance to rhynchosporium and susceptibility to powdery mildew and helminthosporium. Thanks to these characteristics, POVOLZHY 49 demonstrates stable and high yields, averaging 32.3 c/ha across the Middle Volga region and reaching up to 3.82 t/ha in some trials.

The variety was created through breeding work initiated in 2002 in the Samara region via intraspecific hybridization. It is recommended for cultivation in various regions of Russia, including Bryansk, Moscow, Tula, Lipetsk, and Orel regions. POVOLZHY 49 is suitable for both grain-forage use and brewing purposes, making it universal and in high demand among agricultural producers. High productive bushiness and improved agronomic indicators make this variety a promising choice for intensive farming.
