Description KURLAK
KURLAK is a spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) variety belonging to medium-early and grain-forage crops. The plant is characterized by a short stem and semi-erect bush, ensuring resistance to lodging. The vegetation period is 69-75 days, allowing for effective use of the variety in the Middle Volga region, including the Penza and Ulyanovsk regions, as well as the Republic of Mordovia and Tatarstan. The grain is large, with a 1000-grain mass ranging from 45 to 51 grams, featuring an unwaxy abdominal groove and covering lodicules. The ear is pyramidally-cylindrical, of medium density, with long bristle-awned awns and medium intensity of anthocyanin coloration of the tips. The plant has a medium degree of waxy coating on sheaths and the ear, contributing to its resistance to adverse conditions. The KURLAK variety is distinguished by high drought tolerance and resistance to lodging, making it a reliable choice for cultivation in variable climate conditions. According to field trials, it is resistant to powdery mildew and root rots, however, susceptible to striped mosaic. Average yield in the region is about 35.4 centners per hectare, while in the Penza region and the Republic of Tatarstan, an increase in yield to the standard is noted at the level of 4.7 and 2.2 centners respectively. The maximum registered yield reached 62.1 centners per hectare in Tatarstan. Protein content in the grain reaches 15.6%, indicating high quality of raw materials for feed purposes. KURLAK is recommended for cultivation in various agro-climatic zones, where its drought and disease resistance, as well as high productivity, are valued. Thanks to its characteristics, the variety is suitable for use in grain-forage production, providing a stable and quality yield. Its short-stemmed structure and semi-erect bush type contribute to the convenience of mechanized harvesting and reduced yield loss. Thus, KURLAK represents an effective solution for farmers seeking high yield and reliability in barley cultivation.
