Description

Podolsky 14 is a spring barley variety, distinguished by its medium-late maturity (73-85 days) and belonging to the steppe ecotype. Plants have medium height (63-78 cm) with upright plant form and stems of medium thickness, resistant to lodging. Leaves are narrow, lanceolate in shape with a waxy coating, which contributes to adaptation to various growing conditions. The variety exhibits high ecological plasticity and tolerance to soil and air drought, making it a reliable choice for cultivation under challenging climatic conditions. Podolsky 14 demonstrates resistance to several diseases, including powdery mildew, helminthosporiosis, and root rots. It is also weakly susceptible to infection by lethal and hard head rust under artificial inoculation. The grain of this variety has high quality, with uniformity up to 97% and crude protein content ranging from 13.0-15.5%. Due to these characteristics, the variety is suitable for both grain-feed and food use. In drought years, Podolsky 14 can maintain yields at 31-42 c/ha, confirming its resilience and productivity. Additionally, the variety shows high resistance to aluminum ion effects in soil, which is particularly important when grown on acidic soils. At an aluminum ion concentration of 1.5 mM, the root length index of this variety exceeds 70%, indicating its ability to maintain growth and development under adverse conditions. This trait makes Podolsky 14 a promising material for selection and use in regions with high soil acidity.
