Barley Karat

Stability and Performance: The 'Karat' Winter Barley

The 'Karat' winter barley, developed by the Volyn Institute of Agro-Industrial Production of the NAAS, is a testament to the resilience required for success in Ukraine's diverse agricultural landscape. Unlike high-input European hybrids that demand near-perfect conditions to reach their potential, 'Karat' is designed for adaptability and consistency across varying soil and weather profiles.

Grain Quality and Feed Value

The core strength of this variety lies in its nutritional profile, with a 12% content of nitrogenous substances in the dry residue. This makes 'Karat' an excellent choice for livestock farms where consistent grain quality is essential for calculating accurate feed rations. It provides a reliable supply of essential nutrients, reducing the need for costly external feed additives.

Strategic Advantages and Considerations

• Hardiness: Excellent winter hardiness reduces the risks associated with crop thinning or total loss during severe winters.
• Cost-Efficiency: It is significantly less demanding regarding high-intensity fertilizer regimes compared to modern proprietary hybrids, making it a budget-friendly option for balanced farming.
• Management Focus: To maximize yields, producers should prioritize timely fungicide applications during the grain-filling stage, especially in years with high humidity, to protect the quality parameters.

For whom is 'Karat' the best choice? It is designed for growers who prioritize predictable performance over high-risk, high-reward international breeding. It serves as a reliable workhorse for farms that need a dependable harvest every season without the financial burden of premium hybrid seed costs.
