Cossack

Winter barley of the variety Cossack is the result of breeding work, including crossing the variety Chance with Mexican naked-grain barley and subsequent selection of naked-grain forms. This variety belongs to the nudum type and is characterized by a medium-early maturity period — from 85 to 98 days. Plant height varies between 50-90 cm, and the ear is medium-length, two-rowed. The thousand-grain weight ranges from 45 to 55 g, and the grain density reaches 800 g/l. The yield of the variety is in the range of 5.75–6.4 t/ha, making it attractive for intensive cultivation in the Polissya and Steppe regions. One of the key features of the Cossack variety is its high protein content in the grain — from 14.3 to 17.2%, which allows its use not only in the food industry but also in compound feed production and as valuable grain fodder raw material. The variety demonstrates resistance to lodging, shattering, as well as to major diseases such as powdery mildew, helminthosporiosis, and rust, provided that seeds are treated and fungicides are applied during the vegetation period. Winter barley Cossack is recommended for cultivation in the agroclimatic conditions of Polissya and Steppe, where it shows stable yield and grain quality indicators. Due to its characteristics, the variety is widely used for grain and silage production. It was registered in 2010 and is a development of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine, which confirms its adaptability and efficiency in domestic agriculture.
