Description

Agronomy and Cultivation of Purple Passion

The Purple Passion (F1) asparagus hybrid, registered in Ukraine in 2025, is characterized by its distinct anthocyanin coloration and late shoot emergence. To achieve high yields in the Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissya regions, as well as in greenhouse conditions, strict adherence to cultivation protocols is required.

Soil Preparation and Planting

As a perennial crop, site selection and preparation are paramount. Purple Passion thrives in light, well-drained sandy loam or loam soils with a pH of 6.5–7.5. Deep plowing (up to 30 cm) and the incorporation of organic matter are essential. Recommended spacing is 1.5–1.8 meters between rows and 30–40 cm between plants. Crowns should be planted at a depth of 15–20 cm.

Care Throughout Development Phases

  • First Year: The primary focus is root system establishment. Consistent moisture via drip irrigation and rigorous weed control are critical. Nitrogen fertilizers should be applied in split doses during the first half of the growing season.
  • Second Year: Maintenance involves either ridge formation (for white asparagus) or flat-bed management. Given the large diameter of the stems at the base, maintaining soil moisture at 70–80% of field capacity is vital for shoot quality.
  • Harvesting: Due to its late emergence, harvest begins later than standard varieties. Shoots are harvested when they reach 15–20 cm in height. The narrow-triangular tip and tight bracts of Purple Passion require careful handling during harvest to maintain marketability.

The plant exhibits moderate phylloclade density and intense green foliage, indicating high photosynthetic efficiency. As the variety features both male and female flowers, phytosanitary monitoring is essential toward the end of the season to ensure plant health for the following year.
