The Jonagold apple is a high-yielding winter variety of American breeding, created in 1943 by crossing the Golden Delicious and Jonathan varieties. The tree is medium-sized, reaching a height of about 3 meters, with a rounded, medium-density crown. It begins to bear fruit in the third year after planting. The presence of pollinators is recommended for successful fruiting. The variety prefers fertile, moderately moist areas with good sun exposure.
Jonagold fruits are large and uniform, weighing from 140 to 220 grams, in a round-oval shape. Their skin is of medium thickness, smooth and shiny, colored yellowish-green with a bright, blurred-striped orange-red blush covering most of the surface. The flesh is dense, juicy, yellowish in color, with a harmonious sweet-and-sour taste that becomes more pronounced towards the end of storage. Harvest maturity occurs in late September to early October, and fruits can be stored in a refrigerator for up to 6-7 months, ensuring good transportability and commercial appearance.
The variety has medium winter hardiness and resistance to scab, but is less resistant to powdery mildew. Yield is high — up to 40-50 kg of apples can be collected from a 10-year-old tree. Due to its taste qualities, long shelf life, and attractive appearance, the Jonagold apple is widely used both in private gardens and on an industrial scale in various regions.
