Ruttya

Botanically, the culture consists of shrubs or subshrubs with opposite leaves and the vibrant, often two-lipped flowers characteristic of the family, which attract various pollinators. The most well-known species, Ruttya fruticosa, is prized for its spectacular flowering featuring shades of orange or red.

Successful cultivation requires a stable, warm climate without sudden temperature drops. In regions with temperate climates, the plant is primarily grown as a greenhouse or indoor specimen, as it cannot tolerate sub-zero temperatures.

The plant prefers well-drained, fertile soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH level. A vital condition for healthy development is high humidity and regular, moderate watering, which prevents waterlogging in the root zone.

The cultivation techniques include canopy shaping through periodic pruning, which helps stimulate branching and abundant flowering. Propagation is most commonly achieved through stem cuttings during the spring or summer, provided that greenhouse conditions are maintained for rooting.
