Botanically, Dionysia is highly adapted to extreme conditions. The plants form dense, hemispherical cushions composed of tiny rosettes, often covered with glandular hairs or farina, which help minimize water loss in their native arid habitats.

Cultivation requirements are strict, focusing on excellent drainage. A gritty, mineral-based substrate consisting of sand, fine gravel, and minimal organic matter is essential to ensure the roots do not remain wet, as this is fatal to the plant.

Climate management is crucial; Dionysia requires a cool, airy environment with high light intensity. In temperate climates, they are best suited for alpine houses or cold frames that protect the plants from excessive rain during the summer months.
