Espostoa is a genus of columnar cacti belonging to the Cactaceae family. Native to the mountainous regions of Peru and Ecuador, these plants have evolved to survive in high-altitude environments characterized by intense solar radiation and significant temperature variations.

The defining botanical feature of the genus is the dense, woolly hair that covers the stem. This trichome layer serves as a protective barrier against extreme sunlight and helps regulate internal moisture levels, making it a unique aesthetic specimen in the world of succulents.

Successful cultivation requires bright, filtered light and excellent ventilation. Unlike some other desert cacti, Espostoa benefits from a porous, inorganic-heavy substrate that facilitates rapid drainage and prevents the root system from remaining saturated for extended periods.

The recommended potting mix consists of high-quality grit, perlite, and a small percentage of peat or compost. During the active growth season, water should be applied only after the soil medium has dried out completely at the depth of the pot.
