Description

Systematic position. The Interruptus weevil (Neocoenorrhinus interruptus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Rhynchitidae. This insect is recognized as a specialized pest in orchard ecosystems, known for its ability to damage various fruit-bearing species throughout its life cycle.

Host plants. This species primarily infests plants within the Rosaceae family. Its main targets include apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees. Furthermore, it often thrives on wild shrubs such as hawthorn, which can serve as a reservoir for the pest, allowing it to re-infest cultivated orchards annually.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter. In the spring, they emerge to feed on developing buds and young leaves. Mating occurs shortly after, followed by oviposition, where females deposit eggs directly into the plant tissues, often causing the plant parts to wither and die.

Damage and economic impact. Adult weevils leave distinct holes in foliage and blossoms, leading to significant reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the trees. Larval feeding inside the tissues causes structural damage and deformity of leaves and shoots. Heavy infestations result in premature defoliation, stunted growth, and a substantial decrease in fruit yield and overall tree vigor.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Cultural practices, such as tilling the soil beneath tree canopies to disrupt overwintering sites, are highly recommended. Sanitation measures, including the removal and destruction of infested foliage, help reduce local populations. Chemical control with targeted insecticides may be necessary during peak activity periods, ensuring applications follow safety protocols.
