Apple fruit weevil

The apple fruit weevil (lat. Neocoenorrhinus pauxillus) is a small beetle belonging to the family Rhynchitidae within the order Coleoptera. This species is a significant pest of fruit orchards, recognized for its specialized feeding habits that target essential developmental stages of various pomaceous and stone fruit trees.

The host range of Neocoenorrhinus includes a variety of economically important fruit crops, such as apples, pears, cherries, plums, and apricots. These weevils are capable of causing substantial damage, particularly in the early spring, by feeding on developing buds and young, tender shoots during the critical phases of tree growth.

The biological cycle begins with overwintering as adults, which hibernate in the soil at depths of up to 15 centimeters. As temperatures rise in early spring, the adults emerge to feed on buds, leaving distinct puncture marks. Females later lay eggs in petioles or young shoots, which they often girdle to induce wilting, providing a suitable environment for the emerging larvae.

Damage caused by this pest is twofold: direct feeding damage by adults leading to bud destruction and indirect damage by larvae living in fallen or wilted foliage. Severe infestations can result in significant defoliation, stunted shoot development, and a reduction in fruit set, which collectively threatens the long-term productivity of the orchard.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to mitigate the impact of the apple fruit weevil include:

• Deep soil cultivation in autumn and spring to disturb overwintering sites and reduce adult populations.
• Sanitation practices, specifically collecting and destroying fallen infested leaves and debris where larvae reside.
• Application of authorized insecticides targeting the adult stage during the early bud-burst phase.
• Monitoring beetle presence using visual inspections and pheromone-based traps to determine the necessity of intervention.
