The family Daphniidae, commonly known as water fleas, belongs to the order Cladocera. Despite the name, they are not agricultural pests. While they are often observed in irrigation ponds, reservoirs, or hydroponic systems, their presence is generally beneficial rather than detrimental to plant production, as they actively participate in the filtration of stagnant water.
The biology and life cycle of Daphnia are highly efficient. They reproduce through cyclical parthenogenesis, which allows for rapid population increases when environmental conditions are optimal. During stress periods, they produce dormant eggs (ephippia) that can persist in the environment, demonstrating a robust survival strategy common to branchiopods.
Regarding potential damage, Daphniidae do not feed on plant tissues, nor do they act as vectors for agricultural plant pathogens. Their presence is a sign of a healthy aquatic environment. In irrigation management, they act as natural bio-filters, reducing turbidity and algae concentration in stored water, which is highly advantageous for irrigation infrastructure.
No pest control measures are required for Daphnia as they are not pests. Farmers should be aware that these organisms are extremely sensitive to many synthetic insecticides and herbicides. Excessive use of chemicals near agricultural water supplies can lead to a population collapse, potentially degrading the natural water purification services provided by these aquatic crustaceans.
