Daphnia galeata

Daphnia galeata is a species of cladoceran crustacean belonging to the family Daphniidae. It is a common planktonic organism found in the pelagic zone of lakes and reservoirs across the globe.

The most recognizable morphological feature of this species is the presence of a pointed head helmet. The shape and length of this helmet are highly variable and often depend on the presence of predators, a phenomenon known as cyclomorphosis.

The body is enclosed in a transparent carapace, which facilitates the observation of physiological processes. Adult individuals typically range from 1 mm to 2.5 mm in total length.

Movement is achieved through the rapid beating of the second antennae. This creates the characteristic jerky swimming motion that allows these organisms to maintain their position in the water column while filter-feeding.

Taxonomically, Daphnia galeata is part of the Daphnia longispina complex. Distinguishing it from related species often requires detailed microscopic analysis of the carapace morphology and rostral shape.

The population dynamics of Daphnia galeata are strongly influenced by seasonal water temperature changes. They are most active during the spring, summer, and early autumn months.

Reproduction is primarily cyclical. During favorable conditions, the population increases through parthenogenesis, where females produce clones without the need for fertilization.

As water temperatures drop or environmental stress increases, the population shifts to sexual reproduction. This process leads to the formation of ephippia, which are resting eggs encased in a protective chitinous shell.

Ephippia are highly resistant to environmental stressors such as desiccation, freezing, and digestive enzymes. They settle in the lake sediment, acting as a "seed bank" for future generations.

With the return of favorable spring temperatures, the resting eggs hatch, re-establishing the planktonic population in the water column and restarting the annual life cycle.
