How to identify
Longhorn beetles, belonging to the family Cerambycidae of the order Coleoptera, are easily identified by their exceptionally long antennae.
These insects vary significantly in size, color, and shape, ranging from tiny species to large specimens that can exceed 10 centimeters in length.
The larvae are cylindrical, legless, or have small legs, with robust mandibles specifically adapted for chewing through solid wood tissue.
Their life cycle includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult, with some species taking several years to complete their development.
Most adults are active during the day, although some nocturnal species exist that prefer to feed and mate under the cover of darkness.
What it damages

When it appears

During this period, females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark or existing wounds on the trunks of susceptible host trees.
The larval stage is the most prolonged phase, lasting from one to several years depending on the environmental temperature and wood quality.
Adults emerge from the wood after metamorphosis, leaving behind clear, circular, or oval exit holes that are visible on the tree surface.
Warm, sunny days are ideal for adult activity, during which they feed on leaves or bark and actively search for mates.
Signs of infestation
The most reliable sign of an infestation is the presence of frass (wood dust/sawdust) accumulating around the base of the tree or in bark crevices.
Wilting foliage or dying branches in specific parts of the tree can indicate that larvae have interrupted the internal nutrient flow.
Visible exit holes on the trunk or large limbs are definitive evidence that a generation of beetles has already emerged.
Bark discoloration or localized swelling on the trunk may suggest the location of larval galleries under the surface.
The sighting of large, long-horned beetles resting on tree bark during the summer is a clear warning sign of a potential population present.
Control measures
Sanitation is the primary control method, involving the removal and destruction of dead, dying, or heavily infested trees to reduce the population.
Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation, fertilization, and pruning minimizes the risk of attracting egg-laying female beetles.
Protecting mechanical wounds with grafting wax or specialized sealants prevents females from accessing the vulnerable inner wood for oviposition.
Chemical control using systemic insecticides can be applied during the adult flight season to prevent new infestations on high-value trees.
Monitoring using pheromone or light traps allows for precise timing of management actions and helps track the local pest population levels.
