The fungus survives as teliospores in both the soil and on the surface of rye seeds. Infection occurs at the early seedling stage, specifically when the germinating grain is susceptible to the pathogen's penetration into the coleoptile.

The primary host for this fungus is winter rye. The disease causes significant stunting of the plants and prevents normal head development, leading to severe yield losses in infected fields.

Economic damage is caused not only by reduced grain yield but also by the degradation of seed quality. Fields with high infection rates may suffer from reduced plant density and poor crop vigor throughout the growing season.

The infection process starts in the autumn during the germination of rye seeds. Optimal conditions for fungal growth include moderate soil moisture and temperatures favorable for the seedling emergence.

The mycelium develops systemically within the plant tissue throughout the winter and spring. Symptoms typically become visible as the plant reaches the jointing and heading stages, reflecting the internal spread of the pathogen.

The disease is characterized by long, linear streaks or blisters on the leaves, leaf sheaths, and stems. These lesions initially appear gray, eventually turning into a dark, powdery mass of spores.

When the epidermis of the plant ruptures, it releases the black teliospore masses into the field. Infected plants are frequently distorted, twisted, and fail to produce viable grain due to the systemic nature of the colonization.

Effective control is achieved primarily through the application of systemic seed treatment fungicides. These treatments are essential for eliminating spore-borne inoculum present on the seed coat.

Agricultural practices, including crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum levels and the use of resistant rye cultivars, are crucial. Proper field management and adherence to recommended sowing times also help minimize the risk of infection in susceptible crops.
