The primary host for Oncobasidium theobromae is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The disease affects young shoots and branches, leading to systemic necrosis of the vascular system.
By infecting the xylem, the fungus blocks the movement of water and nutrients. This results in the characteristic wilting and dieback of branches, which eventually kills the affected parts of the plant.
The pathogen causes significant economic harm to cocoa plantations. If left uncontrolled, the systemic nature of the infection can lead to the total collapse of tree production and potential tree death.
Seedlings and young trees in nurseries are highly susceptible. An outbreak in a nursery can lead to a 100% loss of young stock, impacting the future replanting plans of farmers.
The spread of the disease reduces the total yield of the plantation by killing the fruit-bearing branches, requiring expensive management and periodic tree replacement strategies.
