Okra mottle is caused by the Okra mottle virus (OkMV), a member of the Geminiviridae family and the Begomovirus genus. It is a plant virus containing a single-stranded DNA genome.
The virus acts as an obligate pathogen, hijacking the plant's cellular machinery to replicate. Due to the nature of begomoviruses, it replicates in the nuclei of plant cells and spreads throughout the phloem.
The primary vector for the transmission of Okra mottle virus is the whitefly, specifically Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired by the insect during feeding and transmitted to healthy plants.
The pathogen is highly specialized and is known to impact malvaceous crops significantly. Molecular diagnostic tools, such as PCR, are essential for accurate identification and differentiation from other mosaic viruses.
Environmental stability and high vector efficiency make this virus a persistent threat in regions where both the host plants and the vector population overlap throughout the year.
What it damages
The primary host for this pathogen is okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). The crop is vulnerable from the seedling stage through to maturity, with younger plants suffering the most severe developmental issues.
Other plants within the Malvaceae family can also be hosts, acting as inoculum sources during the off-season. This makes the management of wild Malvaceous weeds crucial for agricultural security.

Signs of infestation
The most diagnostic sign of Okra mottle is the presence of yellow, patchy chlorosis on the leaves, which creates a mottled or mosaic appearance throughout the canopy.
Leaves exhibit significant structural changes, including curling, crinkling, and a leathery texture. The margins of the leaves often show upward or downward cupping.
Affected plants are characterized by severe stunting of internodes, resulting in a dwarf-like appearance. The overall growth rate is significantly slowed compared to healthy plants in the same field.
Reproductive development is impaired, resulting in reduced flower production and premature shedding of buds. Fruits that do develop are usually small, deformed, and chlorotic.

Weed control is mandatory, particularly focusing on the elimination of malvaceous weeds surrounding the fields, as these act as the primary reservoir for both the virus and the whiteflies.
Adhering to strict planting schedules and maintaining spatial distance between new and old crop cycles can significantly reduce the pressure of the disease on fresh okra plantings.
