The fungus produces mycelium that colonizes the leaf tissue and eventually breaks through the stomata to form conidiophores. These microscopic structures produce conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum for spreading the disease throughout the field or greenhouse.

Persistence of the pathogen is largely maintained in soil debris and infected crop residues. It can survive during dormant periods, ready to germinate when temperature and humidity conditions become favorable for colonization.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the fungus. High relative humidity and moderate temperatures (20-25°C) significantly promote the sporulation and germination of Cercospora lactucae-sativae spores.

Taxonomically, the fungus is classified within the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Ascomycota. It operates as a hemibiotroph or necrotroph, depending on the stage of infection, ultimately destroying the host tissue to complete its life cycle.

The primary damage occurs on the leaves, which are the edible and marketable part of the lettuce plant. Infections result in discolored, spotted, and necrotic tissues that render the product unfit for human consumption.

Economic losses are significant, particularly in intensive lettuce production systems. A severe outbreak can lead to the total loss of a crop if the infection occurs during the early or mid-developmental stages.

The presence of lesions reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, causing stunted growth and poor head formation. This reduction in vigor makes the lettuce more susceptible to secondary pathogens, including various soft-rot bacteria.

In addition to fresh-market losses, the pathogen can impact seed production fields. Infected seed stalks show reduced vitality, and there is a documented risk of seed transmission, which could introduce the pathogen to new planting areas.

Post-harvest quality is severely impacted as well. Even if the lettuce appears lightly infected at harvest, the rapid progression of lesions in storage causes premature rotting and loss of market value.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, circular to irregular lesions on the lower leaves. These spots start as chlorotic (yellowish) areas that eventually turn brown or tan with a distinct margin.

A telltale sign of this disease is the appearance of a gray to olive-colored velvety mold on the underside of the leaves, directly beneath the necrotic spots. This mold consists of the fungus's reproductive structures.

As the lesions expand, they may coalesce, causing the leaf tissue to die and turn necrotic. In many cases, the center of the spot dries out and may drop away, giving the leaves a "shot-hole" or tattered appearance.

Infection tends to progress upward through the plant canopy as the lower, older leaves provide the necessary microclimate for the fungus. In severe cases, the entire outer foliage of the lettuce plant collapses.

Distinguishing Cercospora from downy mildew is essential for management. Cercospora lesions are typically more distinct and less restricted by leaf veins compared to the angular yellow patches associated with downy mildew.

Crop rotation is the most effective cultural control method. By avoiding lettuce cultivation on the same plot for at least three seasons, growers can significantly reduce the amount of inoculum present in the soil.

Sanitation practices are vital. All crop residues should be removed and destroyed immediately after harvest. Eliminating weeds that belong to the Asteraceae family is also crucial, as they can act as alternative hosts.

Managing the greenhouse environment is essential for control. Reducing relative humidity through proper ventilation and avoiding overhead irrigation can create conditions that are less conducive to fungal sporulation.

Chemical control involving fungicides may be utilized if environmental conditions favor disease outbreaks. However, due to the short harvest cycle of lettuce, growers must strictly adhere to pre-harvest intervals and label recommendations.
