This pathogen is primarily known for causing leaf spot diseases in various lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa). The infection significantly reduces the marketability of leafy greens, as damaged leaves often suffer from secondary decay and aesthetic loss, making them unsuitable for commercial sale.
Beyond cultivated lettuce, the fungus can infect wild relatives of the lettuce family, which often act as undetected reservoirs for the pathogen. In severe cases, the infection impairs photosynthesis, leading to stunted plant growth and significant reductions in total crop yield.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Frequent rainfall and persistent dew provide the necessary moisture for conidial germination and leaf infection.
In greenhouses, where climate control is attempted, outbreaks can occur if ventilation is inadequate, leading to stagnant humid air. Outdoors, the disease typically peaks during late summer months when atmospheric conditions align with the pathogen's optimal growth requirements.
Early symptoms include the appearance of small, chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. As the fungus matures, these spots expand, often turning tan or dark brown with a distinct margin. A faint, grayish, fuzzy growth—consisting of conidiophores and conidia—is typically visible on the underside of the leaves.
Under favorable conditions, lesions may coalesce, leading to extensive tissue necrosis. Infected leaves eventually become brittle, turn brown, and collapse. In advanced stages, the entire plant may show symptoms of wilting and premature senescence due to the loss of functional leaf area.
Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach that focuses on reducing inoculum levels and creating unfavorable conditions for fungal growth. Sanitation remains the cornerstone of control, as removing debris significantly lowers the risk of primary infection.
