Description Napoleon Black
An old Western European variety. Appeared in Dagestan's garden plantings at the end of the 9th century. Introduced by gardener Volganov into the city of Hasavyurt from southern Russian nurseries, after which it spread rapidly throughout Dagestan due to its biological and yield characteristics. Since 1931, it has been officially registered in Dagestan.
A strong-growing tree — 6.0–6.5 m tall, with a broad, spherical, slightly spreading, densely foliated canopy.
Fruits are large — 6.0–6.5 g, dimensions 23 x 20 x 18 mm. Fruit shape varies from elongated-oval to broad-heart-shaped, color dark red, almost black. Flesh is dense, semi-fibrous, medium-juicy, skin thick and firm. Flesh and juice are dark red. Flavor is sweet with medium acidity. Sensory evaluation of fresh fruit is 4.9 points. Stone is medium-sized, egg-shaped, tapering toward the base, weight 0.36 g or 6.3% of fruit mass.
Storage life is good up to 10–14 days, transportability is very good. A versatile variety — fruits are a valuable dessert product and also raw material for compote and jam production.
Late ripening period — June 12–27. Annual yield is 28.0 kg per tree or 93.0 centners per hectare. Cold resistance is above average. Beginning of fruiting on antipka rootstock — from 4–5 years after planting in the orchard. The variety is disease-resistant, but in some years it may be damaged by cherry fly up to 2.5%.
Advantages: high-yielding, versatile, disease- and pest-resistant variety, fruits are transportable and long-storing, an exceptional component in hybridization.
