Viburnum 'Zarnitsa' is a mid-late variety that is easy to grow as a shrub or a small tree up to 3.5 m tall and 400 cm in diameter. The plant is undemanding: suitable for sunny spots and semi-shade, withstands drought and frost down to -35 °C, and is also resistant to diseases and pests.
The fruits are large (0.6–0.8 g), bright red, oval or elliptical in shape. In fresh form, they have a bitter taste, but after freezing the bitterness disappears, making the berries suitable for jams, pastes, jellies, and compotes. Yield is high - from 6 kg to 12 kg per bush in mature age, and fruits for up to 25 years.
The variety is self-incompatible, but best pollinated with pollen of any other viburnum varieties. Flowering occurs at the end of May - beginning of June, and berry ripening - at the end of August - September. Thanks to large fruits and good transportability, 'Zarnitsa' is often used for technical purposes, however, it can also be grown for home consumption and decorative purposes.
