Weigela is a decorative shrub of the honeysuckle family, reaching a height of 0.5 to 3 meters depending on the variety. Its characteristic crown is dome-shaped, consisting of a dense mass of branches covered with dark green leaves with a purple hue and a light green lace-like pattern of veins. The leaves are elliptical, 6-10 cm long, and the shoots stretch towards the sun, creating an elegant contrast between the greenery and the flowers.
The flowering of weigela is one of its most striking merits. In May-June, the bushes are covered with white bells about 4 cm long, sometimes with a slight pinkish tint; a second flowering burst is observed in August-September. Collections of inflorescences of three to four pieces create an impressive appearance, which is especially noticeable against the backdrop of emerald green lawn or in decorative pots.
Care for the plant is simple and does not require frequent intervention: weigela prefers sunny or slightly shaded areas, fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral pH. With prolonged standing water, the plant may die, so good drainage is important; irrigation is required during drought. The bush adapts easily after transplanting and is propagated by layering, cuttings, and basal shoots. After flowering, it is recommended to prune faded shoots by one-third to one-quarter of the height to maintain shape and stimulate the growth of new branches.
Weigela is perfect as a low hedge, border, or element of a composition in a park, alpine garden, or near a water body. Thanks to its cold hardiness up to -29 °C and the ability to withstand winters without shelter, it can be used on terraces, balconies, and patios, where it adds freshness and decoration.
