Sweet Potato RALF

Genetic Potential and Selection Features

The 'Ralph' sweet potato variety, introduced by breeders led by N.A. Lucan, is the result of targeted selection aimed at adapting tuber crops to temperate climate conditions. The development of this variety is based on selection for key physical and chemical parameters: flesh density, sugar content, and post-harvest storage stability.

Agronomic Tuber Profile

• Plant Morphology: The variety features a compact growth habit with moderate vine spread, which significantly facilitates inter-row cultivation and reduces manual labor costs during harvest.
• Technological Characteristics: 'Ralph' tubers exhibit high uniformity in size and weight. The texture of the flesh has an optimal balance of starches and moisture, which minimizes cracking during sudden temperature fluctuations throughout the growing season.
• Disease Resistance: The breeding work conducted by N.A. Lucan and his co-authors has resulted in significant resistance to major soil-borne pathogens affecting convolvulaceae crops.

Practical Application

When cultivating 'Ralph', particular attention must be paid to soil structure. Due to its genetically inherent plasticity, the variety responds effectively to potassium fertilization, which is critical for forming marketable tubers. Following the originators' guidelines for planting dates helps avoid waterlogging during the active tuberization phase. This variety is well-suited for both small-scale farming and intensive production systems where pre-sale preparation and shelf-life during logistics are of critical importance.
