Anise Lovage is a perennial herbaceous plant growing from 60 to 150 cm (up to 1.5 m) tall, belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Its distinctive features include four-angled stems, heart-shaped-lanceolate leaves measuring 7–10 cm in length and 4–4.5 cm in width, as well as dense spike-like inflorescences of blue or lilac flowers. Blooming lasts from June to the end of August; meanwhile, the plant produces nectar throughout the day, making it attractive to bees and bumblebees.
Lovage is rich in essential oils – up to 15% of the dry matter mass, of which 70–80% consists of methylchavicol, providing the characteristic anise scent. The composition also includes ascorbic, citric, and malic acids, as well as ametoflavon – a powerful antioxidant aiding in protecting cells from oxidative stress.
Lovage has numerous medicinal properties: it strengthens the immune system, has hypotensive and calming effects, lowering blood pressure and easing insomnia. Leaves and inflorescences are used for inhalations, baths, and decoctions for colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, fungal infections, and cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and angina pectoris. Essential oil is used in cosmetics – as a skin gel that strengthens hair roots, smooths wrinkles, and increases skin elasticity.
Culinarily, lovage is valued for its aromatic leaves and seeds, which are added to salads, meat and fish dishes, baked goods, compotes, and jellies. In the food industry, it is used as a seasoning for tea, liqueurs, and confectionery.
Growing lovage requires a sunny location and loose, fertile soil with a neutral pH; the plant grows poorly on clay, acidic, or waterlogged soils. Seeds are sown at the end of March–April, and after germination, moderate watering and nitrogen fertilization are provided in spring. Lovage can live 5–6 years without transplanting, while its greens are harvested during budding and flowering.
Contraindications: hypotension, thrombophlebitis, individual intolerance; pregnant, breastfeeding women, and children under 12 years should avoid use without consulting a doctor.
