Cultivation and Agronomy of Ampera F1 Chard

Ampera F1 is a Dutch-bred chard hybrid from Pop Vriend Research B.V., registered in 2019. Known for its intense anthocyanin coloration and robust leaf rosette, this hybrid is highly valued for the fresh market. Achieving high-quality yields requires strict adherence to agronomic practices throughout the growing cycle.

Soil Preparation and Sowing

Ampera thrives in fertile, well-aerated loamy or sandy soils with a neutral pH (6.5–7.5). The crop is sensitive to excessive nitrogen, which can lead to nitrate accumulation in the petioles. The optimal sowing time is early spring, once soil temperatures reach +8...+10°C. Summer sowing is also possible for a second autumn harvest. Recommended spacing: 30–40 cm between rows and 15–20 cm between plants. Sowing depth should be 2–3 cm.

Maintenance and Care

• Irrigation: Chard is moisture-demanding. Regular watering is essential to ensure the development of succulent, crisp petioles. Water stress causes the petioles to become fibrous and the leaves to develop a bitter taste.
• Cultivation: After irrigation or rainfall, inter-row cultivation is necessary to break the soil crust, ensuring proper oxygen exchange for the root system.
• Fertilization: During the rosette formation stage (4–6 true leaves), potassium-based fertilizers are recommended to promote sugar accumulation and enhance the vibrant purple color of the petioles.

With its semi-erect leaf habit and moderate savoying, Ampera F1 is easy to harvest. Harvesting begins when the rosette reaches marketable size, either by trimming outer leaves or cutting the entire rosette. Its medium bolting time allows for efficient production scheduling across various climatic zones, including Steppe and Forest-Steppe regions.
