Sunflower SMB 492

Practical insights on growing the SMV 492 sunflower

For farmers operating in regions with high pest pressure, the SMV 492 hybrid developed by breeder Alexey Evgenyevich Volkov stands out for its resilience. This is a case where the genetic robustness of the crop saves agronomists from unnecessary expenses on additional chemical treatments during critical growth phases.

Agrotechnics and field characteristics

The plant exhibits steady growth, reaching a height of 190–200 cm. Due to the large size of the seeds, precise planter calibration is essential to prevent damage and ensure uniform sowing depth. The strong stem ensures excellent lodging resistance, simplifying harvesting operations even under challenging end-of-season weather conditions.

Pest management

The main advantage of this hybrid is its innate resistance to May beetle larvae and the meadow moth. In the field, this translates into a lack of thinning or bare patches that typically occur due to root system damage. Saving on insecticides against the meadow moth is a compelling argument when planning a plant protection budget.

Operational features

• Sowing: Requires careful depth control due to the large seed size.
• Harvesting: The tall stem allows for straight combining with minimal grain losses if the header is correctly adjusted.
• Maintenance: Minimal chemical intervention is required thanks to the natural resistance to pests.
