Sorghum Meteor

Focus on Phytosanitary Reliability

In the grain sorghum portfolio, the 'Meteor' variety occupies the niche of a 'resilient pragmatist.' Developed by the team of scientists at the N.I. Vavilov Saratov State University of Genetics, Biotechnology and Engineering in collaboration with RosNIIPTI SK, this variety is targeted at regions with high risks of fungal infections. The hallmark of 'Meteor' is its genetic shield against diseases that typically slash profit margins.

The Protective Complex: Why Choose Meteor?

The primary advantage of this variety is its resistance to diseases critical for grain sorghum. While competitors might require intensive fungicide intervention during high-humidity periods, 'Meteor' demonstrates robust resistance against:

• Anthracnose, which can destroy up to 30-40% of the crop during epiphytotics;
• Mycosphaerella leaf spot, which damages the leaf apparatus and impairs photosynthesis;
• Brown spot, a pathogen that triggers premature drying of vegetative mass.

An interesting feature is its resistance to downy mildew, which is rare in grain sorghum varieties and makes the crop more predictable within crop rotations.

Agronomic Profile: Who is this for?

'Meteor' was created for farmers looking to minimize chemical load without sacrificing yields. The grain-focused nature of this variety ensures a dense, well-filled panicle and high market-grade grain output. 'Meteor' has few weaknesses, though like most regionally adapted varieties, it requires strict adherence to local planting dates and optimal stand density. It is an optimal choice for operations practicing resource-efficient technologies, where a high baseline of stress resistance is paramount.
