A new diploid variety for the Forest-Steppe with high 1000-kernel weight and improved lodging resistance.
Description
Agronomic Profile of Winter Rye 'Elika'
Registered in 2025, the 'Elika' diploid rye variety offers new opportunities for farmers in the Forest-Steppe zone. Developed by the National Scientific Center 'Institute of Agriculture of the NAAS', this variety is focused on producing high-quality commercial grain with an emphasis on large kernel size and regional adaptability.
Field Performance and Morphology
'Elika' exhibits a balanced plant architecture, which is critical for risk management in the field. Its semi-erect habit, combined with moderate waxy bloom on the ear and leaf sheath, provides effective protection against intense solar radiation, ensuring resilience during short periods of summer heat. The medium heading time allows the variety to optimally utilize spring moisture before peak temperatures arrive.
Special attention has been paid to stem strength: despite the significant total plant length, the distance between the upper node and the ear remains short. This morphological trait lowers the center of gravity and improves lodging resistance, simplifying harvesting and minimizing yield losses even under adverse weather conditions before maturity.
Grain Quality and Potential
A key feature of 'Elika' is its high 1000-kernel weight. The dark aleurone layer confirms grain plumpness, which, combined with its elongated shape, indicates high grain test weight potential. As a winter variety, it requires proper sowing timing to ensure successful vernalization and the development of a robust root system capable of efficiently absorbing nutrients from Forest-Steppe soils.
- Adaptation Zone: Forest-Steppe.
- Type: Diploid variety (population).
- Resilience: Moderate pubescence density under the ear and medium ear density ensure good ventilation, reducing the risk of excess moisture accumulation.
