Rapeseed Sky

Stability of Ukrainian Breeding in the Field

The "Skai" rapeseed variety, developed by the Institute of Oilseed Crops of the NAAS, is a reliable choice for farmers focusing on adaptability rather than aggressive chemical reliance. Unlike premium foreign hybrids that demand perfect growing conditions, this variety shows remarkable resilience to the climatic challenges typical of the steppe and forest-steppe zones of Ukraine.

Economic Viability

The main advantage of "Skai" lies in the balance between moderate production costs and predictable results. With a yield potential of 30–40 centners per hectare, the variety produces grain with a high oil content (up to 45%), making it a highly liquid commodity for processing plants.

• Key Strengths: Exceptional resistance to lodging and pod shattering. This is crucial during harvest, especially when weather conditions are unpredictable.
• Who is this for: Ideal for farms looking to reduce production costs without compromising oil quality. It is forgiving of small agrotechnical errors that would often be fatal for expensive, high-input imported hybrids.
• Weaknesses: The variety requires strict adherence to planting windows. Early or late seeding can impact winter hardiness, which is a characteristic feature of intensive variety forms.

"Skai" demonstrates that local breeding can effectively compete with international brands on the field, ensuring business profitability with sensible investments in seed stock.
