Description
Agrotechnological potential of the "Komiza" variety
Registered in 2024, this variety opens new horizons for quinoa cultivation in Ukraine. "Komiza" is a simple hybrid developed by the Sumy National Agrarian University, specifically adapted to the Forest-Steppe and Polissya climatic zones. Due to its early flowering and maturation, the variety efficiently utilizes moisture during the spring-summer period, which is vital for this crop.
Cultivation and Care Guidelines
- Sowing: Early maturity allows for sowing as soon as the soil warms up to 8–10°C. It is crucial to ensure precise seed placement at a depth of 1.5–2 cm.
- Planting Pattern: Given the medium height of the plants and the medium width of the panicle, a wide-row planting scheme with 45–70 cm spacing is optimal. This provides sufficient space for root development and facilitates mechanical inter-row cultivation.
- Soil and Nutrition: Quinoa is demanding regarding soil structure. "Komiza" performs best in light, well-aerated soils with a neutral pH. Avoid waterlogged areas with poor drainage.
- Phased Care: Weed control is critical during the initial growth stages, as the crop develops slowly. Once the rows close, "Komiza" rapidly accumulates biomass. The medium saponin content requires attention during processing but provides natural protection against pests in the field.
The large 1000-seed weight and the loose structure of the panicle promote excellent aeration, reducing the risk of fungal diseases in the humid conditions of Polissya. The variety demonstrates high harvest efficiency, making it suitable for both grain production and industrial processing.
