Pumpkin Veltruska obrovska

Genetic Potential and Fruit Morphology

Czech breeding company Moravoseed has introduced the "Veltruská obrovská" cultivar, which has remained a standard in the large-fruited pumpkin segment for decades. The genetics behind this variety are the result of collaboration between John Bertinat Seeds and Moravoseed, focusing on stable fruit development in Europe's temperate climate. Biologically, the crop belongs to Cucurbita maxima, which determines its structure: dense, sugar-rich flesh and a robust rind capable of withstanding long-term storage.

Technical Specifications and Cultivation Insights

• Weight and Sizing: The average weight of a marketable fruit ranges from 8 to 10 kg. This is the optimal size for industrial processing and retail distribution, as the fruit does not overgrow to critical dimensions, maintaining structural uniformity.
• Geometry: The rounded shape ensures even distribution of nutrients and simplifies logistics — these pumpkins are easier to stack and transport without sustaining damage.
• Storability: The cultivar's genetic resilience allows the harvest to be stored for many months without losing visual appeal or nutritional value, which is a critical factor for farms targeting winter sales.

Practical interest in "Veltruská obrovská" is driven by the combination of high productivity and relative tolerance to varying soil conditions. The root system is efficient at absorbing moisture and minerals, enabling a predictable yield under standard agricultural practices. The high density of the flesh makes this cultivar an ideal choice for both culinary applications and the production of high-quality animal feed supplements.
