Phlox Vityaz

The Breeding Heritage of Elena Konstantinova

The garden phlox 'Vityaz' is a signature variety developed by the renowned Russian breeder Elena Alekseevna Konstantinova. Created in the early 2000s, this variety has secured its place in perennial collections due to its reliability and distinct, sturdy appearance. Unlike many cultivars focused solely on vibrant aesthetics, 'Vityaz' offers a classic balance of form and resilience.

Agronomic Features and Application

This variety belongs to the mid-to-late season phlox group. Its primary advantage is high resistance to powdery mildew, making it a preferred choice for gardens with high humidity or dense planting conditions, where other varieties might fall prey to fungal issues. Key characteristics of the plant include:

• Flower diameter: 3–4 cm;
• Type: Variety bred by Elena Konstantinova;
• Application: Landscape design (background of mixed borders), group plantings, and color accenting.

The plant develops strong, upright stems that do not require staking, significantly simplifying garden maintenance. The flower heads possess a dense, uniform structure, maintaining decorative appeal throughout a long blooming season. 'Vityaz' is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a time-tested variety that demonstrates stable development without the need for frequent fungicide applications.
