Peony CINCINNATI

Practical Guide to Cultivating the 'Cincinnati' Itoh Hybrid

The 'Cincinnati' peony, developed by the Federal Research Center for Horticulture, represents the pinnacle of breeding, merging the robust structure of tree peonies with the vibrant, recurrent blooming cycle of herbaceous varieties. For landscape professionals, this cultivar serves as a reliable asset for high-impact decorative zones where visual consistency and endurance are paramount.

Site Planning and Operational Use

Reaching a mature height of 80–90 cm, this hybrid is an ideal candidate for mid-to-background placement in large-scale flower beds or as a focal point in residential gardens. Its sun-loving nature is the primary management constraint; to ensure the 18 cm diameter blooms maintain their full, lush, double-petaled form, site selection must prioritize full sun exposure.

• Seasonal Window: Blooming between May 31 and June 15, 'Cincinnati' effectively bridges the seasonal gap, offering a stable display of pink hues during the transition from late spring to summer.
• Maintenance Requirements: As an Itoh hybrid, it boasts significant structural stability. The stems are generally capable of supporting the large, heavy double flowers without extensive additional staking, provided they are sited in optimal soil conditions.
• Garden Application: Best utilized in solar-exposed perennial borders or as solitary specimens in open lawn areas to highlight the depth of the petal structure.

From an agrotechnical standpoint, 'Cincinnati' rewards careful planting with longevity. It is specifically suited for climate zones where winter hardiness is a concern, as it leverages the genetics of its woody ancestors to ensure safe overwintering and vigorous spring regeneration.
