Darnel ARVICOLA

The Genetic Architecture of «Arvicola»

The perennial ryegrass «Arvicola», developed by Feldsaaten Freudenberger GmbH&Co.KG, represents a synthesis of advanced European breeding programs involving Euro Grass Breeding KG and the Belgian institute ILVO. This variety is engineered for long-term pasture and hay production, focusing on the dynamic relationship between plant biomass regeneration and nutritional content.

Agronomic Engineering and Field Performance

The technical design of this variety centers on its stooling habit. «Arvicola» develops a dense sward, which serves as a biological mechanism to suppress weed intrusion. In a practical farming context, this significantly reduces the need for herbicide intervention and ensures a clean, high-quality forage yield throughout the growing season.

• Regenerative Capacity: The variety exhibits rapid regrowth following harvest, ensuring consistent biomass production over multiple cuts and maximizing seasonal yield per hectare.
• Thermal Tolerance: The genetic structure of «Arvicola» allows for robust performance under fluctuating weather conditions, preventing thinning of the stand during stressful climate periods.
• Consistent Development: Early spring emergence is a core design feature, providing farmers with reliable scheduling for the first harvest.

The meticulous work by the original breeders at Feldsaaten Freudenberger ensures that «Arvicola» provides not only high dry matter yield but also the quality parameters required for high-protein forage production. It is a technical solution tailored for modern, efficient agricultural systems.
