Onion Romero

Reliability and Market Appeal: The Romero Onion Experience

When selecting hybrids for the fresh market segment, the main priorities shift toward consistent quality and shelf appeal. Romero from Yuksel Tohum A.S. is a proven choice for growers who value predictable yields and a premium look that catches the buyer's eye.

Field Performance and Cultivation

With a maturity period of 120–130 days, Romero fits perfectly into a mid-to-late season schedule. This growth cycle allows the bulb to develop fully without the pressure of a rushed harvest.

• Vigor: The plant develops a strong root system, which is vital for maintaining growth in variable soil and climate conditions.
• Mechanization: The uniform, round shape of the bulbs makes them highly suitable for mechanical harvesting, significantly reducing the percentage of damaged or unmarketable produce.
• Resilience: The hybrid shows solid field tolerance, maintaining growth stability even under irregular irrigation patterns.

Market Quality and Handling

The bright brown skin of the Romero onion is its standout feature. It is dense and durable, which helps the bulb maintain its integrity during sorting and transport. Unlike more fragile varieties, Romero keeps its outer layers intact, which minimizes waste during post-harvest handling and enhances the final appearance in retail displays.

Storage Insights

As a salad-type onion, Romero is best suited for fall and early winter markets. While it offers the juicy, mild characteristics consumers expect from a salad onion, it also stores remarkably well for its class. Under proper ventilation and controlled storage temperatures, the bulb remains firm and commercially viable well into the mid-winter season, providing farmers with a reliable window for high-value sales.
