Onion Antonina

Technical profile of the 'Antonina' onion

The selection developed by the Dnipropetrovsk Research Station of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing (NAAS) represents a specialized bulb onion variety adapted to Ukrainian climatic conditions. The primary engineering focus of this variety is the development of an ellipsoid bulb shape, which directly impacts the efficiency of mechanized harvesting processes and packing density during logistics.

Agrotechnical features

• Morphology: The ellipsoid bulb configuration provides an optimal balance between surface area and volume, facilitating more uniform neck drying post-harvest.
• Scale structure: Tight adherence of outer scales minimizes the risk of mechanical damage during grading and enhances barrier properties against pathogens.
• Adaptability: The originator focused on breeding a variety capable of maintaining stable shape and bulb weight despite temperature and humidity fluctuations during the growing season.

The practical application of the 'Antonina' variety is targeted at farms aiming for high-quality marketable produce with excellent storage potential. The bulb geometry allows for the efficient use of standard grading lines, reducing loss percentages during post-harvest processing. This variety is the result of targeted breeding where every parameter—from geometry to scale structure—is designed for commercial viability and the streamlining of vegetable processing cycles.
