Blue Sail is a lupine variety from the legume family, known for its bright blue inflorescences and undemanding care. The plant reaches a height of 50 to 80 cm (in some sources up to 150 cm), has palmate leaves and spike-like inflorescences with a diameter of 0–5 cm, which form a characteristic "sail-blade-boat" structure. The flower retains a rich blue shade throughout the flowering period – from May to July.
For planting, a depth of 2–3 cm is recommended (in some cases up to 10 cm) and a distance between plants of about 20–25 cm, which ensures good air circulation and prevents overcrowding. Lupine prefers sunny areas, moderately fertile soils with an acidic or slightly acidic reaction; it tolerates stagnant water and alkaline soils poorly. Care is simple: regular watering during drought periods, removal of faded inflorescences to prolong flowering, pruning of dry parts in autumn, and compost fertilization in spring.
The "Blue Sail" variety is widely used in landscape design – both as a standalone decorative plant and in mixed borders, rockeries, alpine slides, and compositions with hydrangeas, irises, or bells. Due to its symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, it also serves as an effective green bio-fertilizer. Frost hardiness reaches zones 3–4, making it suitable for moderate climatic conditions. Packaging usually contains seeds weighing about 0.5 g, but in some variants – rhizomes up to 1 kg. This plant is suitable for both gardens and container plantings, adding brightness and vitality to any composition.
