Lily Southern Night

Engineering Parameters and Morphology

The 'Southern Night' (Yuzhnaya Noch) lily, developed at the I.V. Michurin Federal Research Center by breeder V.V. Martynova, is a product of rigorous selection aimed at balancing hardiness with aesthetic performance. The variety's genetic background provides a reliable growth cycle and a structurally sound plant architecture.

Stem Construction and Geometry

• Structural Integrity: The stem reaches a height of 90–120 cm. This robust stalk design ensures high resistance to lodging, maintaining stability even under heavy precipitation or wind loads.
• Floral Dimensions: The flowers span 12–16 cm in diameter. This specific cup geometry ensures visual density, which is a critical metric for industrial-scale cut flower production.
• Pigmentation Stability: The deep red coloration is the result of high anthocyanin density, specifically bred for resistance to ultraviolet-induced fading.

Aromatic Profile and Commercial Utility

A defining technical trait of 'Southern Night' is its potent fragrance—a rarity among standard Asiatic hybrids, which are typically scentless. This feature positions the cultivar as a high-value niche product for the floral market. The post-harvest longevity of the cut stems is facilitated by a dense epidermal tissue structure, which minimizes moisture loss and sustains commercial viability during transport and vase life.
