Lettuce Stefano

Genetic Architecture of Protection and Productivity

The 'Stefano' lettuce by Rijk Zwaan is a high-tech breeding product designed to minimize risks in intensive production systems. The technical value of this hybrid lies in its balanced combination of morphological parameters and deep immunological defense mechanisms.

Phytopathological Resistance as a Basis for Profitability

A key engineering solution in this hybrid is the multi-level protection system implemented at the plant's genomic level:

• Downy Mildew Management: Rijk Zwaan breeding provides resistance to a wide spectrum of Bremia lactucae races, which is critical for cultivation in high-humidity conditions and protected ground.
• Viral Shield: The hybrid possesses robust resistance to Lettuce Mosaic Virus (LMV), preventing leaf deformation and loss of commercial quality upon early infection.
• Powdery Mildew Control: The genetic architecture of 'Stefano' effectively limits the development of powdery mildew pathogens, reducing the need for fungicide applications and facilitating the production of clean, marketable greens.

Morphotypic Characteristics

The visual profile of the 'Stefano' lettuce is based on a distinct color contrast. The leaf rosette combines deep shades of intense red and saturated green. The medium maturity timeline allows it to be seamlessly integrated into continuous production cycles, ensuring predictable yields. The plant demonstrates excellent uniformity, which facilitates mechanized harvesting and subsequent packaging processes for the retail market.
