Description Summer
Hyssop – a sunny, drought-tolerant semi-shrub of the Lamiaceae family, growing in open areas with moderately moist soil. Bushes reach 45–60 cm in height and width, stems are four-angled, short-pubescent at the distal end, and form woody bases at the base. Leaves are linear or lanceolate in shape, arranged oppositely, dark green in color, and about 2–2.5 cm long.

Flowering begins in early summer and continues until early autumn. Flowers are two-lipped, blue-violet in hue, arranged in threes to sevens in the axils of upper leaves, forming a spike-like inflorescence, sometimes one-sided. After flowering, elongated seed pods are formed.

Young shoots and leaves are rich in essential oils, giving the plant a mint-ginger-sage aroma and a bitter-spicy taste. Hyssop is widely used in cooking as a spice: its fresh and dried leaves are added to tomato sauces, cucumbers, pea dishes, and also used for pickling vegetables. Flowers are an excellent nectar source and are often planted next to bee-pollinated crops.

In folk medicine, hyssop is used as an infusion or decoction for gastrointestinal diseases, rheumatism, upper respiratory tract problems, excessive sweating, and as an anthelmintic. It also has an expectorant effect and calms the nervous system.

For growing, hyssop does not require special conditions: it prefers light, loose, well-drained soils with a weakly alkaline or neutral reaction. Seeds retain germination for 3–4 years; they should be sown to a depth of up to 0.5 cm to avoid delaying germination. When plants reach 5–6 cm in growth, they are transplanted in a row with a distance of 15–20 cm between bushes and 20–30 cm between rows. Greens can be prepared for winter: cut at the beginning of flowering, tie into small bunches, hang in the shade to dry, and then store in glass jars.

Thus, hyssop combines decorative appeal, aromatic properties, and useful healing qualities, making it valuable both in gardening and in cooking and folk medicine.
