The "40 Years October" grape variety is a technical and wine variety of late ripening, developed by the Ukrainian Institute of Viticulture and Viniculture as well as the V. E. Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking. This variety is distinguished by its high yield, reaching 100 c/ha and above, and is intended for the production of high-quality red table and dessert wines. It is recommended for growing in regions with a suitable climate, such as Moldova and southern Ukraine.
Exteriorly, the variety is characterized by a light-green crown of young shoots with wine-red leaf tips. Leaves are of medium size, round with sharp teeth. Bunches are of medium size, conical or branched, and the berries are round, black with a waxy bloom, of medium or large size. The flesh of the berries is juicy and intensely colored, the juice is dark ruby. The taste of the berries is pleasant, with a pronounced cherry tone, which gives the wines special richness and fullness.
The variety is resistant to such diseases as mildew, oidium, and berry gray mold, but is not frost-hardy. Wines from this variety are distinguished by good color and full taste, and after aging acquire unique chocolate-coffee notes. Thanks to these qualities, "40 Years October" is widely used for the production of high-quality red dry and dessert wines, possessing a rich aroma and harmonious taste.
