Gooseberry Petrivka

Why "Petrivka" is the Choice for a Profitable Berry Farm

When selecting a gooseberry variety for industrial or intensive private gardens, minimizing fungicide costs and harvesting time is critical. Developed by the Institute of Horticulture of the NAAS, "Petrivka" addresses several key grower pain points. The lack of thorns on the canes dramatically reduces manual harvesting time—this not only accelerates logistics during peak season but also minimizes fruit damage, which is essential for maintaining premium market appearance.

Agrotechnical Advantages and Resistance

This variety shows exceptional phytosanitary resilience. In conditions of high humidity or wet summers, when neighboring varieties are prone to powdery mildew, septoria, or various leaf spots (mycosphaerella, brown spot), "Petrivka" maintains its canopy health. For a farm, this translates into significant savings on pesticides and enables more sustainable, environmentally friendly cultivation.

• Yield and Marketability: It is realistic to harvest up to 6 kg per bush, ensuring a stable return per hectare with proper management.
• Size and Color: Berries are large, ranging from 4 to 7 grams. The deep red, burgundy, or nearly black color at full maturity makes them highly desirable for both the fresh market and processing.
• Flavor Profile: A distinct sweet, dessert-like flavor sets this variety apart from more acidic industrial analogs, driving high demand from end consumers.

Cold Hardiness as a Foundation for Stability

With frost resistance down to -34°C, this variety can be planted in regions with harsh winters without the risk of bud or wood damage. "Petrivka" requires minimal intervention regarding winter protection, making it optimal for plantations in areas with risky farming conditions. Furthermore, the absence of thorns allows for semi-mechanized maintenance if using a trellis system, upgrading your farm's efficiency to a new level.
