Description Mortarella
Mortarella walnut is a high-yielding variety of European hazelnut, developed in Italy and widely cultivated on the largest plantations in Europe. Plants of this variety can reach up to 4 meters in height with a wide canopy of about 2 meters in diameter. Mortarella is characterized by high cold resistance (USDA zone 4, withstands temperatures from -28.9 to -34.4 °C) and moderate requirements for moisture and soil, making it suitable for various climatic conditions. The plant is sun-loving and begins fruiting as early as the third year after planting.

Mortarella hazelnuts have an average size of 13 to 19 mm, with a subcylindrical, slightly elongated and compressed shape from the sides. The shell is thin, light brown with darker stripes, easily removable. The kernel is white, resembling ivory, with an exquisite taste and develops a crunchy texture and pleasant caramel aroma when roasted. The nuts are arranged in clusters of 3-5 nuts, with a kernel yield up to 50%.

For successful pollination and good yield, it is recommended to plant Mortarella alongside another hazelnut variety, such as Tonda di Giffoni or San Giovanni, since hazelnut female flowers bloom earlier than male ones. Simultaneous blooming of different varieties ensures effective pollination and stable fruiting. Mortarella is an excellent choice for gardeners aiming to obtain high-quality nuts with good yield and resistance to adverse weather conditions.
